Deborah Katz Henriquez is a children's author, illustrator, and educator who uses nature, art, and humor to inspire and illuminate our understanding of the world. Deborah grew up in New York City and studied environmental science at Cornell University before moving to Canada and becoming a nursing professor. In her hometown of Vancouver, she writes, makes art, and lives with her human and canine family.
In 2023, Deborah co-authored “Steve and Eve Save the Planet!” a graphic novel for young readers featuring a kooky polar bear and flying electric car that team up on a hilarious adventure to save the Arctic. The book was shortlisted for the 2023 Whistler Independent Book Award for Children’s Literature as well as the 2025 Diamond Foundation Prize for Children and Youth.
Deborah’s picture book celebrating diversity and “rareness” through the lens of the animal kingdom, Rare is Everywhere, was published in 2017 and awarded the 2018 Vine Award for Children’s Literature. The book was subsequently translated into Spanish and Arabic, and published in French by Presses de Bras-d’Apic.
